Frequently Asked Questions
We understand that not everyone is familiar with waste management solutions and how they can benefit your business. Below are some of the common questions we receive.
If you have a specific question, feel free to email us at [email protected] or call 01454 228899.
Why use a waste baler?
Balers are an efficient way to collect, store, and transport recyclable materials. By compacting waste and then tying the compacted material into a block, the bales are then readily acceptable to the recycling industry, as bales are dense blocks and are advantageous for transport to achieve better payloads and then easier for the recycling centres to handle, which often leads to potential rebates and to cost savings.
Certain volumes/types of bales can also attract financial rebates for clients, which can create an income stream for otherwise what would have been waste products disposed of as a cost. Balers also help you save space, keeping your site clean, tidy, and more hygienic.
How do I know which baler is good for me?
We know it can be overwhelming to choose with so many technical options available. That’s why we offer a free waste audit with no obligation. We’ll help you find the right baler based on your waste volume, available space, materials, and current costs.
What is a mill size bale?
A mill size bale is a standardised bale that can be accepted directly by recycling mills. These bales can be easily stacked, stored, and transported in bulk—both nationally and internationally. Non-standard bales may need to be re-baled, which adds handling costs.
When should I get a horizontal baler?
You should consider a horizontal baler if your business processes more than 10 tonnes of recyclable materials (e.g., cardboard, paper, plastics) per week. Horizontal balers are more efficient than vertical ones when dealing with large volumes.
Is steel wire or plastic banding best for bales?
It depends on the bale size and type of waste:
- Small balers: Plastic banding is common.
- Mill size balers: Plastic banding or steel wire.
- Horizontal balers: Steel wire is often preferred for larger bales. We can help you choose the best option based on your materials and the strength required.
Can the baler be stored & used outside?
Yes, all our equipment is suitable for outdoor use. However, we recommend protecting your baler from direct exposure to the elements to ensure long-term durability.
Can I bale shredded paper?
It depends on how the paper is shredded. Strip-shredded paper can be baled, but confetti-style (cross -cut) shredded paper is not normally suitable for baling.
Why you should only bale PET bottles instead of shredding?
Plastic bottles should be baled as-is because shredding them makes sorting difficult. Shredded bottles are often considered mixed, contaminated plastics and can’t be easily recycled.
Should I remove the PET bottle cap?
Removing caps isn’t necessary, but it can make the baling process easier. If you’re baling large volumes of bottles, a bottle piercer can be added to the baler to eliminate the need for manual cap removal.
Do I need to clean the cardboard of tape?
Most recyclers won’t mind small amounts of tape on cardboard, but large amounts could cause the bale to be rejected.
Can I mix cardboard and paper in one bale?
For mill size bales, cardboard and paper should not be mixed. Smaller bales might be accepted by some recyclers, but it’s best to check with WHS or your waste collection company.
What’s the difference between a Pneumatic and Hydraulic press?
- Pneumatic balers: Operated by an air-driven cylinder (compressor) – typically low pressure – circa 10-15 Bar.
- Hydraulic balers: Operated by a pump and electric motor via hydraulic cylinders – High pressure operating at 200+ Bar = denser bales/less collections
What power does a baler require?
Most balers we supply run on a 3 Phase 380/400 V 7.5 kW motor. For advice on your specific setup, contact us for guidance.
What’s the difference between a compactor and baler?
Compactors: Compress large amounts of mixed waste for disposal, which doesn’t require sorting. However, waste collection for compacted waste tends to be more expensive.
Balers: Compact recyclable materials (like cardboard or plastic) that can be sold for recycling. While baling requires more labour
